Scars from tattoo removal can be a source of frustration and embarrassment for many individuals. While tattoos are often intended to be permanent, circumstances change, and people seek removal for various reasons. Unfortunately, the removal process itself can sometimes leave behind scars, which may affect one’s self-esteem and confidence. However, DermaEraze Scar Treatment is an effective solution.

Understanding How Scars are Formed

When a tattoo is removed, whether through laser treatments, surgical excision, or other methods, the process can damage the skin, leading to scar formation. Scars occur as part of the body’s natural healing response to injury. During tattoo removal, the skin is essentially wounded, triggering inflammation and the production of collagen to repair the damage. Depending on factors such as skin type, the size and depth of the tattoo, and the removal technique used, scars may vary in appearance and severity.

Scars resulting from laser tattoo removal, although they are generally uncommon when the procedure is performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner. Although scars in our clinic are very rare, we often see scars from other practitioners. This is when we need to use our DermaEraze tattoo scar removal treatment. Laser tattoo removal involves using lasers to break down the tattoo pigments in the skin, allowing the body to gradually eliminate them. While the goal is to remove the tattoo with minimal scarring, individual responses to the treatment can vary.

Types of Scars: Scars resulting from tattoo removal can manifest in different forms:

  1. Hypertrophic Scars: These scars appear raised and may be red or darker than the surrounding skin. They result from an overproduction of collagen during the healing process. These scars may require steroid injections.
  2. Atrophic Scars: Atrophic scars are characterised by a loss of tissue, resulting in depressions or indentations in the skin. These scars may require soft dermal filler as part of the treatment.
  3. Keloid Scars: Keloids are raised, thickened scars that extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound. They can be itchy, tender, and aesthetically displeasing. These are very difficult to treat, we will use cortisol injections.
  4. Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation: Changes in skin pigmentation may occur after tattoo removal, leading to darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation) patches of skin.

Here are some factors that may influence the likelihood of scarring from laser tattoo removal:

Skin Type:

  • People with darker skin tones may be more prone to developing hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation after laser treatments, which could affect the appearance of the skin in the treated area. This is the primary risk group with hypopigmentation being the main risk when the laser was used either in the wrong wavelength or with too much power. Using too much power means that at the same time the laser is moving the tattoo ink it’s also moving your skin’s melanocites.

Older Thin Skin:

  • Extra care needs to happen when dealing with thin skin common in older patients. Thin skin tends to have less elasticity and can take a longer time to heal.

What Other Scars Does DermaEraze Treat?

Infection Risk:

  • Anytime the skin is treated with lasers or other procedures, there is a risk of infection. Proper aftercare, including keeping the treated area clean and following post-treatment instructions, is crucial to minimise this risk. This is specially true when tattoos on the hands and wrists and bellow the knee are treated. Infections are also a main contributor to scars.

How does DermaEraze Tattoo Scar Treatment Work?

Scars must be managed very carefully. If after a year a scar remains, we can then use DermaEraze tattoo scar treatment, in order to soften them.

DermaEraze tattoo scar treatment works by creating precision trauma on the affected area. This sends signals to the brain to send collagen and lymphatic fluids to the area in order to repair the trauma…..the scar….is then repaired as a by product of the trauma.

DermaEraze tattoo scar treatment will not magically make the scar vanish….what it will do is two fold. It will soften the scar tissue making it less obvious AND it will induce your own body to re-pigment the scar the colour of the rest of the skin so that it blends better with your skin.

We pride ourselves in that most see an improvement from the first treatment.
